Avatar The Last Airbender: How Sokka Made His “Space Sword”
The Avatar Sokka has always relied on his boomerang and club to fight, but a Fire Nation swordsman has shown him what a real weapon can be.
Avatar: The Last AirbenderMuch of the combat system is built around flexing, but there’s still plenty of room for a dazzling variety of weapons and martial arts styles to stay balanced – and give the non-players something to do. -masters like Ty Lee and Sokka. Sokka was initially armed with traditional Southern Water Tribe weapons, but later got an upgrade.
Through Volume 3: The fire, Sokka felt that his combat skills were hopeless and that without bending, he could not contribute to the team effort. All of that changed when a meteor hit the ground near the gang’s camp, and Sokka decided to have his own master. This, in turn, would lead to an incredibly unique sword.
Sokka learns from Piandao
Sokka’s new “space sword” – and his attempt to create it – reflects the growth of his character as a whole. This sword was emblematic of his transformation from a cautious, tradition-driven tribal member to a free-spirited and open-minded adventurer. Her meeting with Suki of the Kyoshi Warriors taught her that girls and women can be warriors too, and meeting Aang gave her knowledge about spirits. Now Sokka was ready for a bit more growth, and there was a master swordsman in the Fire Nation who could help him realize his potential: Piandao, a member of the White Lotus organization.
Aang encouraged Sokka to find a mentor in the same way Pakku and Toph had taught him to bend, so Sokka met the recluse Piandao and humbly requested training. It was an empty container ready to be filled, which was exactly the attitude Piandao needed in a student. Sokka had already come a long way from his days in the Southern Water Tribe – when he acted like the big man on campus – and now he was much more creative and flexible. This would be reflected both in his training with Piandao and in his rather symbolic new sword, forged from the meteorite that crashed near his camp.
Sokka forges the space sword
Sokka began to practice sword style and made remarkable progress, impressing Piandao. Along the way, Sokka trained in arts such as calligraphy and was able to draw the landscape from memory, demonstrating a creative and unorthodox thought process. Finally, Piandao said it was time for Sokka to craft his own sword to truly express himself in battle.
Only one material would do: the meteorite. With Toph’s metalbending to aid him, Sokka mined a piece of the ore from the meteorite and brought it to Piandao, who helped forge it into a single sword with a black blade. Nothing like this had been designed before in Avatar, and this sword quickly received a baptism of fire when Sokka used it in a serious combat match with his mentor.
Sokka fought as hard as he could, using his ingenuity and tactical thinking throughout the process. Piandao declared him a true warrior and wished him luck on his journey, and of course Sokka continued to use this “space sword” alongside his Water Tribe weapons. The blade has never suffered any scratches, nicks or dents in its many battles – but tragically, the sword made its last resistance for a long time.
During Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka had the Space Sword with him as he fought aboard a Fire Nation airship with Suki and Toph, until he dropped it. The sword fell in the Wulong Forest far below, never to be seen again. He was sad to see him disappear, but luckily the Hundred Years War ended soon after. Sokka experienced great personal growth in the process of forging and training with this sword, as well as memories that he would keep with him forever.
