How Senzu Beans Work
Senzu Beans debuted in the original Dragon ball anime and manga, appearing when Goku seeks training with Korin. They look like normal lima beans and are even referred to as such in some anime dubbing. Despite their harmless appearance, these legumes hold incredible power inside for anyone who eats them.
Eating a single Senzu bean gives the consumer’s body the equivalent of ten days of food and nourishment, quickly relieving hunger and fatigue. This can lead to overloading, however, as the portly Yajirobe shows. He ate several beans before learning their magical properties, becoming excessively full and gaining more weight. Beings such as Saiyans, who require excessive amounts of food and energy, can fight the satiety effect of beans faster than others.
Beyond food, they can also greatly heal an injured fighter. Eating a Senzu Bean restores his ki and fighting spirit, as well as some of his more serious injuries. Examples of this include fighters who have regrown missing teeth and Yamcha’s impaled torso being restored. However, they appear to be primarily adept at healing physical injuries, with illnesses such as Goku’s heart virus not being affected by a Senzu bean. Apparently they taste like fish, possibly reflecting the feline farmer Korin. Goku is known to pass them on not only to allies, but even enemies like Cell who he wants to fight fairly.
The origin of Senzu beans
Senzu beans were created by Korin, a legendary martial arts master in the Dragon ball universe. Despite being a rather tiny 800-year-old talking cat, Korin is incredibly gifted, his power earning him the right to be sent from his world to help Kami. He held in his possession the Mystical Sacred Water, which greatly increases a fighter’s speed and strength. This led to him being sought out by a young master Roshi and, much later, by Goku.
Korin is the only one who grows Senzu beans, and his tower is the only known place he does. Beans are notoriously difficult to grow and are also limited in numbers, so they are only supplied when desperately needed. Despite this rarity, Korin’s only true role in the franchise of Dragon ball z is to provide Z fighters with Senzu beans before or during an uphill battle. This continued all the way from the Buu saga to more recent arcs in Dragon ball super.
He also developed a relationship with Yajirobe, which resulted in the latter becoming a Senzu Bean farmer in Dragon Ball Online. Neither Yajirobe nor Korin are major players in current parts of the franchise such as Dragon ball super, but the mighty vegetable they peddle continues to aid Goku and the others in their most difficult battles.
