Meet Chandrakanta Debbarma, the first from Tripura to become Muay Thai champion

While Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, is the national sport of Thailand, Chandrakanta Debbarma master the nuances of martial art at home. The 25-year-old from Khowai district, Tripura brought great pride to the northeastern state by becoming the first Muay Thai Tripuri Champion.

According to Tripura Chronicle, he was introduced to martial arts at 15 through a local trainer and has never given a single hour for training since.

According to EastMojo, he won gold medals at National championship organized in Mussoorie in 2015, in Gujarat in 2016, and won the silver medal at Meghalaya in 2017. He also won a gold medal in North East Youth Festival held in Sikkim in 2019. He was later selected to represent India at the IFMA Muay Thai World Championship in Bangkok in 2019 but unfortunately was unable to participate due to an injury he received during training.

He has always been athletic and enjoys sports in all its forms. “I prefer to attack; it also depends on who the opponent is. Sometimes it’s smarter to act in defense, ”he said. His greatest strength is his ability to hit hard and run 30 km a day to stay in shape.

While talking about his journey and the challenges he has faced, he told EastMojo.com “As a fighter you have take care of your health and diet but since I come from a farming family, it has always been difficult for me to meet the standards.

He is not only a brilliant fighter, he also believes in spreading the knowledge of this martial art to others. less privileged children. “Since I was introduced to this beautiful form of martial art and trained for free, I also wanted to do something like this to future fighters. Those who are poor and unable to get paid coaching, give them a chance to make a name,” he shares.
