What is Capoeira?
Capoeira is a form of Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music. It dates back to African slaves in Brazil who practiced it at the beginning of the 16th century. Dance and music were incorporated to disguise their fighting techniques.
While capoeira was declared illegal at the end of the 19th century, following the abolition of slavery in Brazil, it quickly began to be incorporated into martial arts in the 20th century. The art form received special protected status as “intangible cultural heritage” by Unesco in November 2014.
